Grant Faulkner: The Power of Being Brief
As writers, we are rarely taught to write short. But learning how to be succinct is an important skill, no matter what genre you’re writing. In this workshop, Grant Faulkner, co-founder of 100 Word Story and the author of THE ART OF BREVITY, will discuss how a different type of creativity emerges within a hard compositional limit and explore the many different forms that short shorts can take, and how they can influence or be incorporated into longer forms.
You will see how the whole is a part and the part is a whole. You will learn how to question each word, to reckon with Flaubert’s mot juste, and to move a story by hints and implications. Discover how stories are built through gaps as much as the connective tissue of words, so what’s left out of a story is often more important than what’s included.
In addition to THE ART OF BREVITY, Grant Faulkner’s books include PEP TALKS FOR WRITERS: 52 INSIGHTS AND ACTIONS TO BOOST YOUR CREATIVE MOJO. His essays on creativity have been published in The New York Times, Poets & Writers, Lit Hub, Writer’s Digest, and The Writer. He is the author of the short story collections ALL THE COMFORT SIN CAN PROVIDE and FISSURES, and an editor of the flash fiction anthology NOTHING SHORT OF 100. His stories have appeared in dozens of literary magazines, including Tin House, The Southwest Review, and The Gettysburg Review.
Join us on Thursday, June 11th, 5:30-7:00pm PT to learn how brevity can strengthen your writing, whatever your genre. You can register here to save your seat.
