Your chance to meet NYT Best-Selling Author, Yangsze Choo
5:30PM-7:00PM PT, WEDNESDAY JUNE 26TH VIA ZOOM.
A NYT BEST-SELLER, A REESE WITHERSPOON PICK, A NETFLIX ORIGINAL SERIES,
AND SHE KNOWS HER KUEH FROM HER KUAY TEOW.
Hello, everyone!
I am SO excited to announce the guest for my next Zoom chat and Q&A—well, I guess I’ve already given it away—Yangsze Choo, the author of the only books in the past twenty years that all three Yim ladies (my mom, my author-sister Natasha, and myself) have unanimously enjoyed. (If you know both me and Tash, as many of you do, you’ll see this is quite an achievement.)
Yangsze has accumulated in three books so many accolades that I am going to list them at the end, to make sure they don’t slow down my pacing. Suffice it to say, Yangsze models the success that almost all of us would like to achieve. Acclaimed for the plotting of her mysteries. Addictive for the uninventable (yes, my word) details of her rich and exotic settings. Precise yet often lyrical in her language. An unmitigated commercial success. If you wanted to know how to accomplish any of these things, who could you ask? So, how much better to be able to ask all these questions of one friendly, dark-chocolate-addicted author? (Very handy for me that I prefer the milk stuff.)
I would really like a good turn-out for this. Yangsze is being so generous to speak to us, I’d like the compliment returned with a sea of smiling faces. In fact, I will throw in a sweetener: On the night, I will be awarding nine free 10-page critiques from three professional dev editors (details below). To win, you need to select your editors, register, and be present at the end of the night when the prizes are drawn, AND you’ll need to hold up a copy of one of Yangsze’s books to claim your prize.
Plus, I recommend you read her work beforehand so you know better what you’d like to ask her. A binge warning should accompany that recommendation, but what is better than wanting to binge an author?
I myself slipped into a binge. Like Yangsze, I have roots in Malaysia. So encountering kueh (“cake” but not really cake) and kuay teow (noodles, but not merely noodles) in Yangsze’s books brought a frisson of…Recognition? Resonance? A strong desire to speak to her, anyway. An itch to ask her about her path, and her craft, and where these books—really so unexpected—mysterious, historical, supernatural, folkloric, come from.
Won’t you please join me?
Register here to save your seat, and if you’d like a free 10-page critique, submit your name below for the editors you’re interested in, and don’t forget to bring a copy of one of Yangsze’s books on the day—Wednesday, June 26th (5:30-7:00pm PT)—to claim your prize if your name is drawn.
